The Choir of Soloists
Cantus Alba Rutheniae is the choir of soloists of the Musical Capella of the Center for the Belarusian Culture, Language and Literature researches of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. The Musical Capella was created at the Department of Musical Art to introduce scientific results in the practice and present Belarusian music in the international context.
The functioning of the choir of soloists at the scientific research center is a new stage in the development of the creative concept of the choir as a group of soloists. (The author of the idea is the group leader Galina Tsmyg). The current status marked the long-term successful activity of the group, which was formed in the depths of the students’ choir of the Minsk State Linguistic University (1992-2003), then became the youth choir of Minsk (2003-2015) and was developing as a project choir of the Belarusian Union of Musicians (2016-2018).
In the course of its development, the group carried out multiple creative projects, including the preparation of programs of a wide range of styles and their successful execution in Belarus and abroad (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, France, etc.), CD recording (more than ten), award-winning participation in international competitions and participation in numerous international festivals as a guest group. Organization and implementation of cultural exchanges is a significant part of the choir’s activities. Among successful exchange projects with Western European choir groups, there are collaborations with Figuralchor Koeln (Germany), Collegium Musicum Bonn (Germany), Trajecti Voces (the Netherlands), Velborgchor (the Netherlands), Bel Canto (the Netherlands), etc. Under the leadership of Galina Tsmyg the choir performed in the Minsk Red Church and the Belarusian State Philharmonic, Cologne Dome Cathedral, the Cathedral of St. Stephen in Vienna, Aachen Dome Cathedral and others. As a result of successful creative activity, the choir became the foundation for holding international choral workshops (practical classes, master classes, and concerts) of the scientific and creative association “Facultatis” of the Belarusian Union of Musicians.
Since November 1, 2018, Cantus Alba Rutheniae functions as a creative workshop of the National Academy of Sciences, and its repertoire is based on Belarusian music. It comprises the arrangements of Belarusian folk songs for an academic choir, chants, and Belarusian spiritual hymns, music by Belarusian composers of various historical periods and styles, etc. The group also performs Western European, American and Russian choral music of a wide stylistic range.
The timbre organization of the choir in line with the Eastern Slavic tradition, the individual performance of the voice, the conceptual Belarusian repertoire policy and the artistic level of performing interpretations lie in the heart of the active and successful concert activity of the group. After the first acquaintance with the creative work of the choir, they are invited to perform again and again, and the group has strong, long-term creative contacts, which prove their high potential.
The group is headed by Galina Tsmyg – Candidate of Art Criticism, conductor of the choir, teacher.
